How do your kids see you? Do they identify you as a working mom or a stay-at-home mom?
Since I quit my job when my kids were so young, they do not remember a time when I worked 40 hours a week! My oldest son can recall when I worked nights and weekends at Starbucks, but is not aware that I worked anywhere else.
I've talked before about my desire to contribute to the family in a financial way. Equally important to me is the need for my kids to see me as more than just a mom. I want them to see mommy like they see daddy. I want them to know that while my most important role is CEO of the Steele household, I am so much more.
I am a writer, an editor, a trainer and a creative mind. I've worked in PR, and internal/external communications, for both firms and corporations.
I want them to know how I busted my rear to get two degrees to earn more money and climb the corporate ladder - only to climb down as fast as I could to start a family.
I want them to know I didn't lose my career drive, I simply put it in neutral!
I've found a way to work that works for me. That means being home with my kids, and working a part-time business into my day. It means weaving my tasks into my daily routine. It means reinventing the way I see myself to show the kids it's possible give myself fully to them and my work and never have to leave home.
It means I'll never climb a corporate ladder again. Who needs ladders anyway? They are narrow, unstable and lead to a ceiling made of glass.
I choose not to climb, but to soar. Because on this path, there are no boundaries. Just endless possibility. Join me. You'll never look back.
