What does contribution mean to you? Is it defined by finance, family, health, education, volunteerism? It's safe to say that most people strongly identify contribution in a financial sense. Society teaches us to grow up, get a job, and contribute financially. Embracing this identity is easy. However, losing this identity can be tough. For instance, have you ever been fired, demoted or laid off? Have you ever left a job to care for a loved one or to become a stay-at-home mom? No matter which scenario you may have experienced, it dramatically changes your financial status.
Leaving a steady job to become a stay-at-home mom was both exciting and nerve wracking. A dual income family now had to figure out how to manage with a single income. For the first time, my financial contribution was nothing! Right away, we realized that to stay afloat, I needed to find a part-time job, and fast. Although it felt good to be contributing again financially (albeit in a much smaller way), it was exhausting work with little reward. As soon as my husband walked in the door, I walked out in my Starbucks uniform to start my second shift, finally walking back in the door at 11 p.m. This continued on Saturdays and Sundays. I missed tee-ball games, dance classes and family get-togethers. I often missed church and holidays.
Spring forward to 2015. Although my kids are still young, I started to think about how I could become a financial contributor in a more meaningful way. It was easy to imagine how I might resurface once my kids are all in school, but it was really hard to envision a position that would satisfy my desire today to make a larger financial impact. I wanted a career that allowed me to play hard and work less. It was a pipe dream, I thought.
But I'm here to tell you that it is possible to have the type of job that allows you to be a stay-at-home mom, to travel at length, to volunteer at your child's school, take a mid-morning yoga class, and pick the kids up at 3 p.m. Does this resonate with you? If not, that's ok! Do you think it might resonate with someone you know? If so, I'd love to connect with you or them! You see, contribution is what motivated me to start my own business, and it's what keeps me passionate about sharing this opportunity with others.
