A couple weeks ago, I started a new job. I became a Flip Flop CEO. That's right, I've traded in my power heels (but not my mom badge) to make some extra money without ever having to leave the comfort of my couch!
Let me tell you a little about my motivation. Before we had kids, my husband and I talked at length of our desire to have me quit my job and stay at home to raise our children. The only problem was, we couldn't afford it. However, after many sacrifices and lots of prayer, we found a way to make it work after having our second child. But there was a catch. It meant I had to take a part-time job at Starbucks on nights and weekends. The thirteen months I spent as a barista were really tough on me and my family, but it was the only way we could afford for me to work my day job.
Then we had our third child. And let me tell you, three kids are expensive! And exhausting! We were so blessed to continue to allow me to stay at home to raise the kids, but with each day that passed, I began to experience an overwhelming feeling of guilt, spending money that I didn't earn. I used to go crazy clipping coupons, shopping at consignment stores, and signing up for surveys and diaper studies galore, all in effort to save money for our family and contribute in a small way.
Finally, the itch to get a job took over. I wanted a job for so many reasons. I wanted a break from the kids, I wanted adult conversation, and I wanted to maintain my skills and education. But most of all, I wanted to contribute in a larger sense. But what kind of part-time job would allow me to take my kids to school every day, be home for nap time, volunteer in my kids classrooms, and take all the vacation time I want?
